You can spend your holiday surrounded by the wonders of nature. There are several canoeing schools, canoe rental places and camping grounds scattered along the middle and down the lower reaches of the river. Canoeing is also popular for school trips.

The headwaters of the Shimanto River start in Miyama and it winds 196 kilometers down into Tosa Bay. Throughout Japan it is affectionately called “the clear river”. The Chinkabashi bridge is famous for its special design. It has no railings, and sinks with the water level to prevent it being washed away when the river floods.

How about joining a whale watching tour with an experienced captain? You can watch whales and dolphins in Tosa Bay where the warm Black Current provides them with plenty of food. The tours depart from Muroto City, Kochi City (Katsurahama coast), Tosa City, Susaki City, Ogata cho and Tosa-Shimizu. The whale watching season is closed in Winter, except in Muroto where they can be seen all year round.

The Onagadori is a rare bird that has been adopted as a natural treasure and bred in the Onagadori Centre. The tail of the male bird can grow over ten meters long. Onagadori have been bred in Kochi since the Edo era. to improve the species.

The Yoshino River, which is called “Shikoku Saburo”, runs from Kochi to Tokushima. Rafting from the upper reaches of the river with a guide is very popular. Enjoying the exciting experience of mountain climbing and camping are other ways of spending time among high mountains such as Mt.Kajigamori.

Yosakoi-Matsuri is a vibrant dance parade coloured by the sound of Naruko clappers and a cheering crowd adding to the excitement of the music. His held an aually from August 9th to the 12th every year. Each participating team practices hard in order to perform a creative show. There is even a team for visitors to take pastin.
