Welcome to Kochi.
Kochi Prefecture faces the vast Pacific Ocean and covers half
of southern part of Shikoku island. In former times it was calledeTosaf.
Its distance from the Inland Sea coastal side, as well as being
divided by a steep mountain range, has preserved its unique culture.
We will begin to explore the vibrant nature of sunny Treasure
Island to discover its facinating culture.
The Kochi Prefecture 'I' information center
The tourist information center is situated in JR
Kochi Station to provide information and a reservation
service for accommodation.
It is open all year round from 9:00 to17:00 at the
"Tosaterasu" 2-10-17 Kitahonmachi Town, Kochi City.

The average temperature and
rainfall of Kochi Prefecture
Facing the Pacific Ocean, Kochi has a warm, humid climate
with its annual rainfall the highest in the country except
for Okinawa. It snows in the mountains, but generally it
has fine days even in winter, although the temperature can
drop to three degrees below zero at night, and there can
be a big temperature change during the day. The annual average
temperature along the coast is around 17 degrees and the
hottest season is after the rainy season at the end of July.
The maximum temperature rises above 35 degrees and it can
stay hot and humid all night. During the summertime it is
recommended mat you to carry a light jacket for the air-conditioned
hotels and shops. In spring and autumn the climate is very
moderate and pleasant. |

The spirit of the Japanese people.
A pilgrimage to 88 sacred places
Recently, a route to visit 88 sacred places has become
popular all over the country. The route was established
by Kobotaishi (Kuukai) in the Heian era, and the pilgrimage
can be done in various ways; by bus, by car or on
foot.
The temples that are in Kochi Prefecture are the 24th
to the 39th (of the 88) and they are called gascetic
practice templesh because of the hardships of
traveling the route. |

The mid-summer festival "Yosakoi -Matsuri"
From its origin in Kochi, the popularity of this
festival has spread throughout Japan. It is over four
days from August 9th to the 12th. With young people
at the heart, everyone is drawn into the frenzied
excitement of the dance parade. |
